Interview Transcript (English)

The following is an edited transcript of the interview between Weekend Express founder Carrie Zhou and moomoo Canada CEO Michael Arbus, conducted on May 12, 2026 at Web Summit Vancouver.

Opening

Carrie: Thank you so much for taking the time for today’s interview. It’s my pleasure to have you here. We are Weekend Express — we focus on the Chinese-speaking community in North America, and we also help brands bridge between North American markets and the global Chinese community. I have six questions for you today. Are you ready?

Michael: Bring them on — because we are a global brand, we do have roots in Asia, and we are here in North America. We are perfect for this show.

Q1 — Positioning

Carrie: My first question is about positioning. You’ve entered a market that already has established players — Wealthsimple, the big banks, including institutions you’ve worked at before. How do you position moomoo Canada, and who is your core target audience?

Michael: The beautiful thing about moomoo is it’s product first. Why did I — as a Canadian who’s worked in the financial world my whole life — choose moomoo? Because of its product. If you download it and take a look, the first time you see it, you’ll say: I’ve never seen this much power in my hands.

The mission of our entire company is to empower people who work so hard for their money to be able to compete with professional investors. Even if you’re a lifestyle person traveling the world, saving money along the journey — where are you keeping that money? We’re going to give you all the tools you want to be exceptional. We have the Moomoo Academy where you can learn everything and become a professional investor, because your money matters.

Carrie: So it sounds like you’re bringing institutional-level tools from the professional trader’s office into local residents’ daily lives.

Michael: Yes — picture WeChat as a super app that has everything inside it. Now take that concept and put it into financial services. In the old days you had to pay to have a stock analyzed, or listen to Instagram feeds where you didn’t know the source. With us, the concept is: put it all in one place. Even if you’re not studied in finance, you can learn it all. You could become your own best trader — all on your own, all in one place. That’s why it’s unlike anything else in Canada.

Q2 — Chinese Community

Carrie: Since you mentioned WeChat — it’s a tool used by Chinese people globally. How do you see the importance of the Chinese community in your target audience?

Michael: We spend a lot of time talking about our target audience. Our brand and some of our app’s design came out of Hong Kong, where we’re number one in market share. Our success has initially appealed to the Asian community — that’s our roots. But once users get through the onboarding process and say, now what do I do? — if you learn our tools, you’ve got everything.

I used to work on a trading floor — kind of like the old days of Wall Street. It used to take 20 analysts and a whole bunch of expensive tools to come to conclusions that I can now get by hitting a button: “When a stock goes down ten percent compared to its peers, notify me.” We do all that now, and no matter your experience level, you can do that too.

Carrie: One of my friends who’s a big fan of moomoo told me what she loves most is being able to trade US, Hong Kong, and Chinese markets all in one place.

Michael: Yes — the universal account. And we’re also dabbling into crypto in many of our markets. Options trading, prediction markets — all of these trading styles are merging into one. You used to need multiple apps. Now you’ve got moomoo.

Q3 — Brand Strategy

Carrie: I want to talk about brand strategy. Since joining moomoo, you opened a flagship store on Bloor Street — right next to Hermès and Rolex. That’s a bold move for a fintech company. I also watched the YouTube video where you were asking people on the street what they thought about it.

Michael: I was being silly in the streets. (laughs)

Carrie: It immediately breaks the barrier — it turns a cold trading tool into a warm neighbourhood presence.

Michael: Thank you. Most fintech companies rely on how beautiful their app is. But because we’re new to Canada, we wanted to focus on credibility. Why not give people a place to come see our brand — walk in, have a coffee, talk, get a feel? We throw multiple events all year for investor education. And we’re actually opening multiple locations all across Canada — maybe even your city soon. I love it out here. The weather is a lot more interesting to me.

Carrie: So whenever the younger generation walks past Hermès and Rolex, they see moomoo right there.

Michael: We are the premium brand. And the word we always come back to — as opposed to “simple,” which I find insulting — is smart. You’re very smart. Everyone I can see here is very smart. We work hard, we make money, and you’re smart enough to manage your own money and maximize it. Most recently, we’ve always thought of ourselves as a smart place for smart people. Now we’re officially using it. You’ll see it in some of our upcoming branding. Smart, credible, and regulated in every market we operate.

Q4 — Vancouver

Carrie: Since you mentioned Vancouver as a potential location — are you going to bring the Moomoo Academy here soon?

Michael: We want to — and then I would move here to be a part of that. I’m half joking. I really would like to. Right now, the Moomoo Academy is available — even if you’re not in Toronto, you can attend in person or access all the content online. You can learn about stock options, how to trade, how to manage your wealth. And even if you’re just doom scrolling one night — instead of looking at high fashion or places to go in the world — pop into the moomoo app and look at our education center. You can learn everything from beginning to end on how to become a better investor.

Q5 — AI & Regulation

Carrie: Last question — and I think a lot of our audience have this question too: how do you balance AI convenience with Canadian regulation?

Michael: You hit me with a hard one. Most of what we do is heavily focused on making sure it’s accepted by our regulators. AI is a gray area that’s so new. What we’ve started with — in Canada and globally — is: if you’re running your own AI agent, which a lot of people are especially at a tech conference like Web Summit, we provide skills you can download that are safe, that give you access to all our information tools. If you’re using Claude bot or Claude Code, you can download our skills and create your own trading terminals.

But for most people who aren’t there yet — when you open our app, we have an AI character inside that you can ask anything: teach me about this stock, is it cheap or expensive, how do I play this chart pattern, how can I make money today? We have the simple version of AI and the more robust version for those who want to go deeper.

Closing

Carrie: Thank you so much, Michael. It was wonderful talking with you today.

Michael: It was so nice talking with you. Thank you for having me.

Michael:

Michael:
